When you think of New York City, what immediately comes to mind?
- The Statue of Liberty, of course.
- The Empire State Building, perhaps everyone’s second thought (i.e. everyone older than fifty).
- A walk through Central Park on a summer day. (Awesome!)
- Stevie Wonder’s song, “Living for the City”
- Sadly, the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center.
That’s what comes to my mind. The first three thoughts are cherished memories of my first visit to this fantastic city when I was just a teenager. I have heard that Central Park is very lovely during the spring, but it was my summer vacation. The fourth thought is a popular song during my university days from one of my favorite albums, Innervisions (1973), by one of my favorite artists, the incomparable Stevie Wonder. That last somber thought? A memory from a day America will not likely ever forget.
But now I have another thought that comes to mind when someone mentions “the city that never sleeps”. This one thought links and combines all of the other thoughts into one name: Adka.
You say: “New York, New York!”.
- I say: “Adka!”
If you scream “I love New York!”
- Then I’ll echo back, “You love Adka too!”
Andrea Jones is “Adka”, an emerging contemporary artist whose paintings are inspired by both: the artistic traditions of her native Slovakia and by New York City itself.
An artist profile for Andrea Jones was featured in the May 2011 silver issue of ArtisSpectrum, an international art magazine. In her own words: “My New York paintings reflect the bold potential of this unique city and attempt to capture the Big Apple’s energy. I could paint New York City every day and never quite capture all it offers. … New York, New York!”
New York, the melting pot populated with a multiplicity of people from all over the United States and the rest of the world. New York, the urban jungle, Times Square and all the other sites and sounds that create NYC’s one-of-a-kind magical noise and energy! This is Adka's inspiration. This is what she sees, hears, smells, and feels. This is what touches her inner being and gives her an inner vision, which she then recreates in the form of fine art and gives back to us.
After taking her first bite of the Big Apple, this Slovakian artist adapted a fanciful folk-art style she learned in her homeland almost 5,000 miles away and has repeatedly captured and conveyed the heart, soul and spirit of this internationally acclaimed city which welcomes the “huddled masses yearning to breathe free”.
So do you really love New York?
- Then you will definitely fall in love with Adka’s Art.
This delightful and charming Slovakian artist restored and revitalized my cherished memories of New York City and helped me see them again in a brand new light.
Contemporary artist Andrea Jones, “Adka”, was born in the town of Piestany, Slovakia and currently lives and works in the United States. Adka, her childhood nickname, is a common nickname for "Andrea" in the Slovak language. She moved to the United States in 1999 after a princess-like wedding at the 12th century Bojnice Castle, Slovakia. I’ve only just recently discovered Adka’s Art, but her work is already nationally and internationally known and her community of admirers is growing daily in leaps and bounds.
- Adka’s Art has been selected for the Annual International Art Exhibition - November 2011. This event will take place at the Estense Castle of Ferrara in Italy.
- Adka’s Art will be exhibited in The Artists Alley, in downtown San Francisco, Calitfornia. (The date for the exhibition has not been confirmed as of the date of this article.)
- Adka (“Andrea Jones”) is represented by Agora Gallery, a fine art gallery located in the heart of New York's Chelsea art district, where her original contemporary fine art paintings can be purchased.
- Adka’s fine art is recognized by others in the fashion industry. Designer Scarves by Marlena creates unique wearable art by featuring Adka’s art on pure silk scarves. StreetSmartDesignzz features Adka’s art on fashion accessories like purses.
